Figure 7: HP ProCurve Controller Interface
The HP ProCurve Manager Plus with the HP PMM is able to identify users via their name, MAC address, or IP
address. The system allows the administrator to select a previous time period and view a dynamic “playback” of
individual AP/client statistics from that time period. The system is able to correlate the client state with location
for real-time statistics, but it is not able to provide a dynamic “playback” of client location and individual
AP/client statistics during a specified time period. The APs do not support spectrum analysis.
Meraki
The Meraki Enterprise system takes a cloud-based approach to wireless management. APs are installed in the
enterprise, and the controller and management functionality is performed “in the cloud.” The Meraki solution
targets small and medium-sized businesses that value management simplicity.
Meraki works with integration partners that perform predictive designs. However, a predictive design is less
necessary with smaller, less-complex wireless networks. Administrators can import maps into the management
system and position APs on the map by hand.
The system does support many enterprise features such as band steering, load balancing, and auto-power and
auto-channel assignments. After booting, the APs connect to the cloud controller, so enterprises must ensure that
firewall ports are accessible by the APs in order to establish controller communication. The management system
is easy to navigate (see Figure 8); however, it lacks many of the more enterprise-oriented capabilities such as
sophisticated problem-diagnosis features.
