For instance, the system cannot correlate per-client and per-AP statistics with location and time. The Meraki
solution would benefit from having an embedded spectrum analyzer/classifier to simplify network problem
diagnosis and improve self-healing capabilities.
Meru Networks
The Meru controller keeps track of which APs and stations are in range of each other and coordinates AP
behavior in order to overcome co-channel interference and to enable APs to transmit concurrently. Refer to the
overview “Demystifying Radio Management” for more information regarding the Meru system architecture.
The design process for a Meru network is simpler than for competing multichannel architectures because the
network administrator does not need to be concerned with issues such as channel re-use or floor-to-floor co-
channel interference. The Meru architecture uses the same channel throughout a coverage area and relies on the
controller to avoid co-channel interference. For Meru, AP spacing is primarily driven by the need to provide
pervasive coverage rather than by the need to minimize co-channel interference. Therefore, Meru can rely on the
design rule of thumb of installing APs every 60 to 75 feet.
The E(z)RF Network Manager discovers the APs and controllers, and the administrator must drag devices onto
the floor plan and build the network hierarchy (e.g., campus, building, and floor). The controller manages AP load
balancing, band steering, and ATF.
The E(z)RF Service Assurance Manager (SAM) performs background network testing. SAM takes advantage of
the single-channel architecture and an AP-embedded 802.11 client to create AP-to-AP virtual connections and
inject traffic over the connections. In this way, SAM can test network performance (e.g., throughput, latency, and
frame loss) and availability, over the wireless link and over wired connections, between the APs and controllers.
SAM and E(z)RF Network Manager also capture every 802.11 state transition for every device (station and AP)
for a rolling six-month period.
