Motorola provides spectrum analysis on its AP as a licensed software feature. The system is designed to detect
and classify common, non-802.11 sources of interference that can affect WLAN performance. The spectrum
analysis functionality does not need any special analyzer hardware, so it can run on a standard AirDefense sensor.
The solution can run as a dedicated analyzer and provide real-time analysis, or it can run in the background,
periodically scanning and generating alarms if interference is detected. Motorola was the first vendor to provide
distributed spectrum analysis on standard Wi-Fi APs, and it has been granted a patent for this capability. Gartner
does not anticipate that this patent will restrict other WLAN vendors from embedding spectrum analysis on their
APs.
Motorola provides a sophisticated ATF algorithm. Dynamic ATF uses real-time measurement of airtime
consumption. Its WLAN scheduler keeps track of data rates for every client that is associated. Rate-limiting
mechanisms are also built into the WLAN infrastructure and allow administrators to set a policy that limits the
maximum amount of data transferred per client or group of clients (e.g., guests). Motorola also provides a
mechanism to share bandwidth across different service set identifiers (SSIDs) on the same AP. This weighted
round-robin algorithm allows a relative sharing of bandwidth among different SSIDs.
Ruckus Wireless
Ruckus relies on the AirMagnet Planner for predictive network design. Predictive designs must be manually
reconciled with the as-built design. Alternatively, the Ruckus AP Calculator provides a quick way to estimate the
number of APs needed for a design without going through a predictive design.
The ZoneDirector management interface provides the ability to navigate among a list of devices WLANs but does
not provide hierarchical navigation for sites (see Figure 11). The system is a good fit for moderate-sized
enterprises. The system is very intuitive and easy to navigate. The Ruckus APs provide an ATF algorithm that
transmits more consecutive frames to high-throughput-rate clients than to low-rate clients, thereby attempting to
provide equal airtime for all stations on the WLAN. The system also supports AP load balancing and band
steering, but it does not yet support an SLA algorithm. ATF is always enabled.
